The significance of Howell-Jolly bodies in red cell precursors.

چکیده
During the routine examination of sternal marrow smears it was observed that the presence of nuclear fragments in red cell precursors, commonly known as Howell-Jolly bodies, was usually associated with clear evidence of vitamin B12 or folic acid deficiency. Moreover, this seemed to be so even when the megaloblastic transformation of erythropoiesis was not well developed. With further experience the presence of Howell-Jolly bodies does appear to be a finding of diagnostic value even in doubtful cases. In order to test the validity of this impression a series of sternal marrow films examined for HowellJolly bodies has been reviewed. In this the incidence in iron deficiency and other states where B12 or folic acid deficiency could clearly be excluded has been compared with the incidence in conditions known to be associated with B12 or folic acid deficiency. The results of this investigation are presented here.

The significance of Howell-Jolly bodies and giant metamyelocytes in marrow smears.
Howell-Jolly bodies in erythroid precursors can be found in the marrow in a variety of diseases. More than 1% in the later erythroblasts is rarely found except in vitamin B(12) or folic acid deficiency states.Giant metamyelocytes are probably always the result of vitamin B(12) or folic acid deficiency. A distinction is drawn between the deficiency of, and therapeutic need for, vitamin B(12) and...
متن کاملA New Method for Studying Splenic Reticuloendothelial Dysfunction in Sickle Cell
Differential interference contrast (DIC) microscopy (Nomarsky optics) readily demonstrates the formation of “pits” or crater-like depressions in red cell membranes of splenectomized individuals. Splenic reticuloendothelial dysfunction characteristic of many patients with sickle cell disease (SCD) can be demonstrated by technetium spleen scans, but this technique is expensive, requires injection...
متن کاملHowell-Jolly bodies in idiopathic steatorrhoea.
Large numbers of Howell-Jolly bodies were found in the bone marrow and peripheral blood, both before and after corrective haematinic therapy, in three patients with idiopathic steatorrhoea with associated splenic atrophy, who presented with megaloblastic anaemia. The proportion of erythrocytes containing Howell-Jolly bodies was much higher in these patients when compared with the number found i...
متن کاملPrevalence of Howell-Jolly body-like inclusions in HIV patients and their correlation with CD4 counts and HIV RNA viral load.
Previous reports have described the rare occurrence of detached nuclear fragments resembling Howell-Jolly bodies within neutrophils from HIV patients, organ-transplant recipients, and patients on immunosuppressive drugs. To date, their potential clinical significance is unknown, and pathologists tend to disregard their presence. Our study sought to find a correlation between these inclusions an...
متن کاملHowell-Jolly bodies on peripheral smear leading to the diagnosis of congenital hyposplenism in a patient with septic shock
We present a case of isolated congenital hyposplenism that was discovered after the peripheral smear revealed Howell-Jolly bodies. This case serves as the basis for a review of hyposplenism for the general practitioner.
